Herding Animals

Goats are herd animals and need to be with other goats to feel safe, the more goats the merrier. No, a horse or chicken is not a goat nor are they a good substitute as a herd animal for lone goats. If you are starting your herd and wanting to start small, consider wethers to keep your new goats company. Wethers are castrated bucks. If you are interested in a wether let us know and we can talk about who can be wethered.

A Kids Life

  • All Nigerian Dwarf goat kids with exception to pet does and wethers are registered with the ADGA (American Dairy Goat Association.)

  • All kids who were born with horns have been disbudded by our veterinarian between the ages of 4-14 days.

  • A CD&T shot and a sedative were given at disbudding. A second CD&T shot was given 30 days later.

  • All wethers are banded by our veterinarian at around 12 weeks of age / before leaving our farm. Check The Nursery for available wethers.

  • Hooves will be trimmed prior to pick up.

  • Kids nurse on their nanny for two weeks before being pulled to be bottle fed with nannies milk. This ensures kids have received the right amount of colostrum and their rumen has started.

  • Bottle fed kids are handled during feeding time, they are not fed with a bottle bar or bucket fed.

  • We allow all of our goats to free feed early on. We make sure they have alfalfa/timothy available in both shredded and pellets. Kids start getting curious about food real young and some start munching on the grasses available to them before being weaned.

  • Whenever possible we try to treat all of our goats as holistically; they are given herbs, vitamins, and minerals to keep them healthy and in tip top shape.

  • A natural parasite load is common with goats. We only worm our goats when needed. We continually check their Famacha scores and stool sample when necessary. We do this to avoid resistance building of parasites. That said, change brings stress on goats and coccidiosis may become a problem. Please be aware of the symptoms and treat immediately.
