Kidding Schedule 2024

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

It’s time for more babies! Well this year is a little different for us. I had a very bad fall back in January, smacked my head real hard, and scared the you know what out of my human kids. I really whacked my head hard and got to ride in an ambulance for my hospital stay….not a great way to start a new year! I am mostly out of that recovery fog and my body is almost back to normal. Unfortunately I only got about half my herd covered for breeding. I may breed some more of our does before years end but I might wait until next year just to avoid winter kidding.

We have three birthing stalls set up for kidding and last year was the first year we didn’t lock the does in a stall a couple days before due date. We decided to see how the herd handled the kidding. What a surprise when you let nature do what nature is supposed to do! While the nannie was busy pushing, the rest of the herd helped clean up the babies. We just stood back and watched. All of our stress levels were so low while we watched those beautiful babies being born. After the kids are born we do lock mama and babies in a pen for a couple days so they can bond. We let them out with the rest of the herd after disbudding.

Anyway, so far the kids we have available are looking really good. They are super cute and fun to watch boing all over the place. The first babies born this year were to our Fiesta and this was her second kidding. She didn’t make a single peep during labor and we didn’t know we had kids born until we heard their cries. Her ligaments were soft at morning feeding, so we knew she was about ready to deliver those babies of hers, but she did it so quietly. All were born healthy and took to mama very quick.

Well, today is Mothers Day and my human kids made me a lovely dinner and we were on our front porch relaxing the afternoon away. Earlier my son checked on the animals and nothing was concerning. What an awesome way to end the day being made a goat grandma to two adorable goat kids!

The second set of kids born were from our Milagro or Millie as she is known on our little farm. Millie is what we call a first fresher, meaning this is her first time kidding. First Freshers are nervous mamas. They generally don’t know what’s going on when labor hits them. I remember when our first goat and herd queen Merry went into labor….she SCREAMED BLOODY BURDER with each contraction. Millie didn’t make a peep and we didn’t know we had kids born until lock up.

I love my goat babies! I am uploading just a few pictures of the babies but they aren’t the greatest. We will do better cleaner shots of them when I can get all hands on deck that isn’t on Mothers Day!

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you Happy Mothers Day!
